Research Title

  • The Necessity to Develop Social Work Applications Unique to the Japanese Based on Japanese Culture and their Perception Patterns, This study points out limitations of the applications of social work theory to practice and proposes the need to develop social work applications unique to the Japanese, based on Japanese culture and the behavior patterns of the Japanese. In order to appreciate the characteristics of the Japanese culture, concepts of “vertical society (tate shakai),” “the world (seken)” and “dependence (amae)” are quoted and discussed. Furthermore, perception patterns of Japanese interpersonal relations and issues of how they affect the development of social work are discussed. The Japanese perception of mutual support limited to closed relations with direct contact promotes indifference to strangers, and this factor hinders the growth of volunteerism from the local level to the global level. Direct application of the theory, without taking into consideration its relevance to the Japanese culture, causes the theory to be at variance with the practical level which prevents its establishment in Japan.
